Shinness Lodge, 7 miles North West from Lairg on a single track road looks down onto the shores of beautiful Loch Shin in the heart of Sutherland with easy access to east, north and west coasts. A place of wild beauty and unsullied nature, this house is ideally situated for a real Highland holiday.
The traditional stone lodge dating from the 1880īs with its veranda overlooking the loch, is filled with old family treasures and bookcases full of a wide variety of books in every room, including reference library and many classics by authors of the 19th century and more recent childrenīsī library. The owners have lived there until very recently so it is adapted for comfort.
This holiday house has just been subtly redecorated and modernised without it losing any of its charm. You can sink into a comfortable new double bed in what used to be the nursery, with its frieze still on the wall, or bath in an enormous claw footed bath, with lashings of hot water. The whole house is fully centrally heated, and feels warm and cosy with the Aga in the kitchen and open fire in the drawing room. The central focus is the drawing room with TV, board games, grand piano and electric organ, table tennis and darts available in garage.
The Lodge is set amidst 13,000 acres, with a few remote hill lochs and several miles of trout fishing on the Rivers Tirry and Fiag plus red/sika and hind deer stalking in the autumn by arrangement with the stalker. There are 2 boats for use on Loch Shin for trout fishing. Ghillie available by arrangement. For naturalists it is a haven of flora and fauna - nearby is a SSSI peat bog area at Crask Inn - and also of bird life. There are good beaches and golf courses nearby including Royal Dornoch, Brora (designed by James Braid), Golspie, Bonar Bridge and the northern delights of Durness. The north east and the west coasts are within easy reach, affording a wealth of activities from bird watching on Handa Island, to Munro bagging, visiting Smoo Caves, Dunrobin Castle and a wealth of archaeological remains from 2000 or more years ago or just enjoying the stunning scenery of the North West. For those wanting a gentler pace there are marvellous opportunities for painting, reading or just relaxing.
